Milborne St. Andrew Parish Council asked for a traffic management scheme to be developed in line with the aspirations set out in their Neighbourhood Plan.

We have now developed these proposals, which are available for the public to comment upon.

We have been working with the parish council to look at ways to improve the pedestrian environment and slow vehicles travelling through the village centre.

The parish council is looking to use money gathered from developments in the area to fund a scheme that seeks to:

  • slow down all traffic travelling through the 30mph speed limit area on the A354 in Milborne St Andrew
  • improve pedestrian safety, particularly along the narrow footway outside the Royal Oak pub
  • provide clear and accurate road markings so drivers are aware of potential hazards

Temporary build-out

Following a review of the Milborne St Andrew traffic management study, the parish council asked us to develop a design for a build-out adjacent to the Royal Oak pub, enhancing the pedestrian environment while helping to manage traffic through the village centre.

Traffic modelling demonstrated that a priority system is possible. Data recorded during a three-week trial in October 2024 further demonstrated that this is a feasible option that could be considered.

Look at the proposals

The traffic management scheme could include a combination of the following proposals:

  • widening the footway adjacent to the pub by building out into the road. This would improve pedestrian facilities by providing a wider footway and will slow vehicles through the village centre by installing a priority ‘give way’ system
  • new uncontrolled crossing points with five potential locations identified
  • enhanced village gateway lines and signs to help slow vehicles as they enter the village
  • refreshed road markings, including edge of carriageway lines to again help slow vehicles and make drivers aware of hazards
  • refreshed bus stop markings to help prevent parking in the bus stop areas

We need your feedback

We want to hear your views, so please come along to one of our two public engagement events being held at the Milborne St. Andrew Village Hall. You can find out more about the proposals and have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

If you cannot attend the events, please do still complete the survey below.

Complete our survey

It is open from 2 March 2026 until 24 April.

 You can:

  • let us know your thoughts on the proposed traffic management features
  • rank the elements in order of preference
  • let us know your thoughts on the widened footway and priority working outside the Royal Oak Pub

What happens next?

We will use your feedback to help to inform the decisions made.

Following the public engagement period, meetings will be held with elected officials from Dorset Council and Milborne St Andrew Parish Council to decide which elements of the proposals will be delivered.

Construction plans will be produced and any statutory consultations for Traffic Regulation Orders required carried out.

A programme for delivery of the improvements will be established and publicised on this webpage.

Please be aware that there is not enough money to deliver all the proposed traffic management options. One of the purposes of the consultation is to understand people’s priorities, helping to identify which proposals should be delivered within the funding available.
