Dorset Council Launches Consultation on Draft Alcohol Licensing Policy
Dorset Council is inviting feedback on its Draft Licensing Policy for 2026–2031, which sets out the principles the council will apply when exercising its functions under the Licensing Act 2003. Licensing Authorities are required by law to publish such a policy at least every five years, and the council is now seeking views during an 8-week consultation period.
The Licensing Policy aims to make sure that the council promotes the four key licensing objectives outlined in the Act:
- the prevention of crime and disorder
- public safety
- the prevention of public nuisance
- the protection of children from harm
Licensable activities covered by the policy include the retail sale of alcohol, the supply of alcohol in clubs, the provision of late-night refreshment, and regulated entertainment.
Cllr Gill Taylor, Cabinet Member for Health and Housing, said:
“It’s important that our policies are shaped by the opinions of Dorset residents. The Licensing policy helps us define the principles that are applied when we carry out our functions under the Licensing Act 2003.”
Aligned with the Council Plan 2024–2029, the draft policy seeks to:
- Protect young people from harm
- Balance the needs of businesses and local residents
- Encourage tourism and a vibrant, diverse night-time economy
- Reduce alcohol misuse
- Minimise unnecessary regulation
