Dorset Celebrates Young Carers Action Day
Dorset Council is supporting organisations across the country in recognising Young Carers Action Day this week (11 March) , an annual Carers Trust initiative which shines a spotlight on the vital role played by young carers and the support they need to thrive.
This year's theme, 'Fair Futures', highlights the importance of ensuring young carers have equal access to education, well-being support and future opportunities—while recognising the unique strengths they develop through their caring responsibilities.
MYTIME Young Carers, part of the Dorset Carers Service, is leading a programme of events and activities across Dorset and BCP to give young carers aged 5–25 a chance to connect with peers, build confidence and enjoy a break from their caring roles.
Activities marking Young Carers Action Day include:
- Memories Outdoor Activity Days: Over 120 young carers from primary and secondary schools will attend Making Memories activity days at Tile Barn in the New Forest. The days will give young carers the chance to take part in outdoor activities and enjoy time connecting with other young carers in a supportive environment.
- Employability Programme Celebration Event: MYTIME will host a celebration event at Wimborne Football Club for young carers and their families. Awards will be presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Michael Dooley, at the event sponsored by Leonardo Carer Support.
- Level Up in Schools Programme: The MYTIME schools team have prepared tutor group activities and assemblies for the schools in Dorset, to raise awareness of young carers and help other young people understand the challenges they face and how to support them.
Krista Cartlidge, Chief Executive Officer MYTIME Young Carers, said: “Young carers take on responsibilities that many adults would find overwhelming, yet their contribution often goes unseen. Young Carers Action Day is about recognizing their strength while also challenging the inequalities they face. Caring for someone should never limit a young person’s education, wellbeing or future opportunities. Each young carer deserves a fair future.”
Cllr Clare Sutton, Dorset Council Cabinet Portfolio Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said: "Young carers make an extraordinary contribution to their families and communities, often balancing significant responsibilities with school and their own wellbeing.
“Young Carers Action Day is an important reminder that they deserve the same opportunities as every other child and young person. We are proud to work with organisations like MYTIME Young Carers, whose fantastic programme of events helps young carers to build confidence, develop skills and access the support they need for a fair and fulfilling future."
