The Government has provided additional funding through the Crisis and Resilience Fund to support low‑income households that rely on heating oil and are struggling with rising costs.
This funding is intended to help residents who are at risk of losing access to heating or hot water.
A household may be considered on low income if either of the following applies:
- they are receiving:
- Universal Credit
- Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit)
- Housing Benefit, or
- Council Tax Support
- the household does not have sufficient resources to resolve the immediate crisis without incurring unmanageable debt or going without essentials such as food
Who can get help
If you are facing a heating oil crisis, for example, you cannot afford an urgent top‑up and your tank is down to 30% or less capacity, then you may be eligible for support.
You need to meet all of the following to apply:
- you are the main household resident responsible for buying oil to heat your property
- your main heating source is oil
- you are on a low income
- you are at immediate risk of being unable to heat your home or access hot water due to rising oil costs
- the capacity reading on your oil tank is at 30% or less
Your oil tank gauge or your smart oil monitoring on your phone will indicate the level of oil in your tank. You may be asked to provide a screenshot or picture to confirm the current level of oil in your tank.
How to apply
To apply, you will need to complete an application form online. We will ask for information about your household, including the money coming into your home and the money you spend.
If you are receiving Council Tax Support, we will already hold information about your household circumstances so you will not need to provide this again. If you do not receive Council Tax Support, then you will need to complete the full form which will be used to assess your financial situation. Please ensure you provide as much detail as possible.
If you need help to complete the application, you can ask a friend or family member to do it on your behalf. If this is not possible, please contact Customer Services.
We may ask you to provide evidence to verify your situation if required.
