Overview

Tourism signs (also known as brown signs) direct drivers to an attraction or facility along the most appropriate route, and are not used to advertise a business.

Destination categories include:

  • tourist attractions
  • urban and rural facilities
  • camping/caravan
  • leisure drive
  • local services

Tourism signs on trunk roads

If your tourist attraction or facility is located directly off the A31, A35 (west of Bere Regis) and A303 trunk roads, you'll need to apply to National Highways.

Charges

You will be charged:

  • £350 for initial process of an application
  • supply of signs at cost, plus 10% for administration
  • ongoing maintenance - all future maintenance costs will be met by the applicant. Quote to be provided on request to the highways sign shop

How to apply

You will need to refer to this documentation when completing an application for tourism signs:

When you apply, you will need to tell us:

  • applicant details
  • name, address and details of the destination to be signed
  • what general facilities there are
  • details applicable to the destinate category
  • preferred signing detail and locations

After your apply

We aim to respond to your application within 28 days.

We will assess your application in consideration of:

  • quality
  • road safety
  • traffic management
  • the environment

Please note that it may take up to six months for sign installation.
