Roads near or at the end of their life will need resurfacing to replace damage to the layers in the road.
Resurfacing repairs the structural failure in the lower layers of the road as well as the surface, restoring shape and strength.
The section of road to be treated will vary in size depending on the extent of damage, and the repair may be on one side of the carriageway or across the full width of the road.
Carrying out the work
To give as much notice as possible:
- Yellow advance warning signs will be placed on affected roads at least 1 week before work begins. These will advise the dates and times for the planned road closure.
- If you normally park on a road due to be treated, please move your vehicle off the road, or park on a nearby street (Please check that the alternative street is not also scheduled for treatment.)
- Wet weather can delay work, which may mean the programme changes at short notice.
How the Work Is Carried Out
Most road maintenance is completed under a daytime road closure, with crews working between 9am and 4pm so that disruption during busy commuting periods is minimised. On certain routes, work may instead take place overnight to further reduce impact on drivers.
During closures:
- Signposted diversions will guide road users along alternative routes of a similar road classification to the one closed.
- Access to homes and businesses is maintained where possible. However, drivers may occasionally need to wait while machinery is moved or a task is safely completed before being allowed through the work area.
We appreciate your patience while these essential improvements are carried out and thank you for helping us keep the network running safely and smoothly.
Scheduled work can be seen on the roadworks map.
